About this Project

JLK is the preservation architect for the reconstruction of the Nettle Creek Aqueduct in Morris, Illinois.

The structure was part of the historic Illinois & Michigan (I&M) Canal. This crossing has a history of flooding and in 2014 the last aqueduct, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, collapsed. The new design will mitigate the flooding issue by widening the crossing and the aqueduct while maintaining its historic character. An adjacent interpretive area will be designed for display of historic artifacts and information, to pay homage to the crossing and the history of the I&M Canal.

Services include:

  • Working with EXP to design a new aqueduct that is both hydraulically functional and historically appropriate for this context.
  • Consultation with the State Historic Preservation Office for compliance with the previously prepared Memorandum of Agreement for the project.
  • Architectural detailing for the structure to meet Secretary of the Interior Standards
  • Public outreach program to share project information and garner feedback from stakeholders and other interested parties.
